3ST: Causes of the War
States' Rights:
One issue that the country faced was the issue of states’ rights. The South believed that each individual state should decide whether or not the laws are constitutional, especially on the issue of slavery. The South really wanted each state to decide if it was a free or slave state, but the North did not want that. The North got involved with the Southern States by trying to end slavery and by passing unfair taxes and the South wanted the power to make their own laws.
Slavery:
Another issue that the United States faced was the issue of slavery. The Southern States wanted slavery because their economy was based on slave labor. The North wanted to abolish slavery because they felt that it was morally wrong. This issue of slavery caused tensions to steadily rise, especially when new states were admitted to the country because they did not want to upset the balance of free and slave states.
Sectionalism:
Disagreements over states' rights, slavery, the amount of power the national government has under the constitution, and the way the North and South ran their economy caused sectionalism. This made the North and the South put their individual needs and beliefs before their nation.
Tariffs:
In 1832 the U.S congress placed tariffs on manufactured goods. This upset the south because they had to pay more money for imported goods for England, but the north was excited about the new taxes because it meant more money the south had to buy goods from the north. The tariffs on imported goods made the Northern states believe that the south would start to buy goods from the north. This type of assumption made the north believe that the tariffs will help their economy.
States’ Rights, Slavery, Sectionalism, and Tariffs were four main causes of the American Civil War. They were the main causes of why tensions grew between the Northerners and the Southerners.
